The Arran distillery in Lochranza on the Isle of Arran is the newest in Scotland and produces some wonderful whisky. It's a must see for any visit to Arran
Whisky barrels
This is the only whisky distillery on the Isle of Arran, though in years gone by there were many illegal distilleries on the island. It opened in Lochranza in 1995 after a survey was carried out to find a suitable location.
The distillery is located in Lochranza at the north of the island. If you approach from Brodick it is one of the first buildings on the left as you arrive in the village.
The water used comes from Loch na Davie, high up in the hills above Lochranza. This water is supposed to be the purest in Scotland. As the water cascades down from the loch through Glen Easan Biorach it travels over granite and is also softened by the peat.
The result of all this is some wonderful whiskies, and this was recognised when the distillery won the award of 'Scottish Distiller of the year 2007'
Building work on the distillery was delayed for several weeks as the Golden Eagles, which nest nearby, were hatching their chicks
